October 29, 2010 (Berlin) The PDF/A Competence Center achieved positive results at this years DMS EXPO. The international association was present at the exhibition center at a shared stand with eight exhibiting members and an attractive lecture schedule in the PDF/A Forum. The combination of instructive product demonstrations and practical presentations on PDF/A found considerable resonance among professional attendees at the event.
Thomas Zellmann, managing director of the PDF/A Competence Center, summed up the experience: Despite the change of venue on short notice, the DMS EXPO maintained continuity with its past success. The parallel focus on IT and business interests also bodes well for growth in the future. The great number of attendees at our forum and their targeted questions also demonstrated the high readiness for specific introductions and implementation of PDF/A.
Interest in PDF/A was equally high in all areas of application, such as scanning and capture applications, output management or integration in an ECM system. Visitors at the DMS EXPO also learned about impending advances, particularly the PDF/A-2 part of the standard to be published next year. It enables new PDF functions such as JPEG2000 compression, layers and entire folder structures to be included in archiving. PDF/A-2 also supports new comment functions as well as transparency effects.
Olaf Druemmer, executive chairman of the PDF/A Competence Center, commented, The PDF/A Forum was a magnet for the public at the DMS EXPO this year as well. It was clear from our discussions that PDF/A is familiar to the attendees as an ISO standard for long-term PDF archiving. Thus the questions presented focused specifically on implementation or particular topics such as metadata, digital signatures, workflow integration in the manufacturing industry or scalability to cope with high document volumes for incoming mail or output management.
The eight co-exhibitors at the shared stand for the PDF/A Competence Center also expressed their satisfaction with everything.
Ulrich Isermeyer, Adobe Systems:
Acrobat X and the LiveCycle Enterprise Suite were subjects of lively interest from customers. The questions posed by visitors were quite specific and revealed an understanding of the issues. This shows that PDF/A has arrived on the market as an archiving standard.
Dietrich von Seggern, callas software GmbH:
In particular the presentations on the new PDF/A-2 part of the standard ensured that the PDF/A Forum was well-attended on all three days of the event. In discussions at the stand, visitors at the PDF/A pavilion proved to be well-informed about PDF/A in advance. Most came to ask specific questions or to find the optimal solution for their particular project. The flexible support for metadata in callas pdfaPilot 2 as well as automated conversion of Microsoft Office and OpenOffice documents provoked a great deal of interest.
Inga Lust, Compart AG:
The relocation of the DMS EXPO to Stuttgart was accompanied by the inclusion of output management as an important emphasis of the trade show. The great interest of the public in the solutions presented by Compart underscores the continued growing importance of this topic. This year at the PDF/A Competence Center stand, Compart advised interested professionals attending on the use of PDF/A for output management, and we presented our solutions in this area. Comparts presentation in the PDF/A Forum was also devoted to this subject.
Stewart Rogers, Crawford Technologies:
For Crawford Technologies, the DMS EXPO this year offered an ideal platform for presenting our revolutionary PRO production manager solution for the first time in Europe. With regard to PDF/A, its good to see that many attendees are quite serious about their interest in the standard. The PDF/A Competence Center was successful in drawing attention to the new trade show location in Stuttgart. All in all the DMS EXPO proved to be another useful platform for CrawfordTech for the continued interest in transaction printing and the existing potential in this area.
Robert Reichmuth, Docucom AG:
Docucoms presence at the DMS EXPO yielded many new contacts and interesting discussions for us together with the PDF/A Competence Center. We arent the only ones motivated by the subject of PDF/A!
Michael Preu, InovoO GmbH:
This was our first time at the DMS EXPO as exhibitors and we were pleased by the resonance among the attendees. The combination of possibilities for presentations in the PDF/A Forum and professional discussions with visitors to the PDF/A Competence Center pavilion was well received. Our integration of the LuraTech PDF Compressor as a standalone module in InputAccel also inspired great interest. Moreover, the new OCR on demand function we offer provides ideal added capability for meeting the requirements of professional users.
Carsten Heiermann, LuraTech Europe GmbH:
Although the number of visitors to our exhibit has remained the same at the new location, we see a continued increase in demand and considerable growth in the size of projects for our PDF Compressor. PDF/A has become firmly established for scanned documents and OCR applications. Our topics regarding compression and PDF/A-2 readiness attracted great attention as one could see from the attendance figures at the PDF/A Forum.
Dr. Uwe Waechter, SEAL Systems AG:
SEAL Systems is showing a significant increase in prospects compared to last year. The main sector to which we market – the manufacturing industry – was well represented among the attendees. Prospects visited the stand with specific projects for company-wide introductions of PDF/A already in mind. The DMS EXPO was certainly worthwhile for us, and well be there again next year.
The ISO 19005 standard (PDF/A) defines requirements for creating documents suitable for archiving based on the widely available PDF format. The standard specifies in detail what content is allowed and what is not. These and other specifications are intended to ensure long-term readability of the documents regardless of the application software and operating system in which they were originally produced. The advantages of PDF/A such as full-text search capabilities have led it to already replace TIFF as the preferred archiving format in numerous international governmental organizations as well as in private industries.
