PDF Association to begin a series of seminars on the PDF/UA standard

In just one day, learn everything you need to know about creating effective, cost-efficient, universally accessible PDFs

Berlin. Next week, the PDF Association will begin a series of seminars, travelling to a widespread set of destinations, on the subject of the recently published ISO PDF/UA standard (UA for Universal Accessibility). The first event will be on the 22nd of October 2012 in Stuttgart, with seminars to follow in Copenhagen, Bern, Zurich, Berlin, Munich and Amsterdam. At these events, participants from the public sector, business and industry will learn how best to create PDFs that meet both the new PDF/UA standard and all relevant legal requirements.

“Now that it has been published, we want to encourage widespread use and acceptance of the PDF/UA standard as soon as possible,” explained Olaf Drümmer, Chairman of the PDF Association. “It isn’t always easy to convert all kinds of documents to provide universally-accessible content, but this standard creates a good starting point for finally tackling the subject in a structured fashion.”

PDF/UA – Access to documents for all

PDF/UA is designed to ensure that disabled people can access the information contained in PDF documents. This makes it essential to provide information about the document’s structure and natural reading order using so-called “tags”. This has been technically possible since 2001, but the rules for correctly tagging a PDF have until now been far from straightforward. With the clear framework that PDF/UA provides, this gap can now be closed and universally-accessible PDF documents can find their optimal usage potential.

Seminars on a range of subjects

The PDF Association’s seminars will give participants an introduction to PDF and universal accessibility, and demonstrate the advantages of universally-accessible PDFs. In addition, they will explain the effects of the new ISO PDF/UA standard, and clarify the legal requirements for their creation.

The majority of each seminar will be focused on using practical examples to show how to create universally-accessible PDF files using established software such as InDesign or Office. The role of style sheets, tags and content structure will also be discussed, as well as how to create universally-accessible PDF forms. The speakers – all of them specialists in the subject of PDF creation – will provide useful tips for everyday productivity, and will demonstrate step-by-step how an original document becomes a universally-accessible PDF.

The focus of the seminars will vary to suit different target groups. Some will focus primarily on those working in local authorities or corporate communications, while others will be aimed at specialists in the fields of publishing, advertising, printing and media. Even the practical elements of the seminars will be tailored to suit different subjects and target groups, including:

• Office documents:
– Using Word, PowerPoint and OpenOffice to create universally accessible PDFs
– Additional tools (Acrobat, axesPDF, PAC etc.)
– Optimising designs, style sheets and templates
• Publications:
– Using InDesign to create universally-accessible PDFs
– Tools to increase productivity
– Strategies for templates and style sheets
-Using metadata
• Forms:
– Creating universally-accessible forms with Word, InDesign, Acrobat and LiveCycle Designer
-Tips for information design
• Existing and scanned PDFs:
– Procedures for preparing existing and scanned PDFs
– Possibilities and hurdles

Entry to the seminar will cost 299 Euro, or a reduced fee of just 99 Euro for members of non-profit organisations. Entry for students and apprentices will cost just 29 Euro. After all costs have been recovered, any additional revenue will be donated to the NVDA Project. Further information on the subject can be found at http://goo.gl/2IHWU (in German).
